Foreigners who want to work legally in China must obtain a valid work permit card and work residence permit in accordance with the law. Most of the work permits and residence permits we are familiar with are for one year or above, but what about foreigners who have short-term work needs in China? Are there any applications suitable for such foreigners to work for a short term? The answer is yes. According to The Relevant Procedures for Foreigners Entering China to Conduct Short-term Work Tasks (Trial), foreigners entering China to complete short-term work tasks and staying in China for no more than 90 days are required to apply for a "Foreigner's Notification Letter of Work Permit and short-term work type residence permit in China (90 days and less)".

Application conditions

Foreigners who enter the country to complete short-term work tasks refer to those who enter China with Z visas and stay in China for no more than 90 days for the following reasons:

(1) Complete a certain technology, scientific research, management, guidance and other work with the domestic partner;

(2) Conduct trial training in domestic sports institutions (including coaches and athletes);

(3) Shooting films (including advertising films and documentaries);

(4) Fashion shows (including car models, shooting advertisements, etc.);

(5) Engage in foreign-related commercial performances;

(6) Other circumstances determined by the social security department of human resources.

 

Materials

1. Valid passport or other international travel documents, visa document with seal for this entry (please mark with arrows);

2. Visa Application form affixed with a 2-inch blue background photo (can be printed after an appointment);

3. A valid Receipt of China Visa Photographs for Foreigners in Guangdong Province signed by the applicant;

4. Letter of proof (guarantee) of applying for Visa Certificate issued by the employer;

5. Valid Registration Form of Temporary Residence for Visitors, original and copy;

6. Foreign cultural and artistic performance groups and individuals entering China for short-term commercial performances shall submit the approval document issued by the Competent Department of Culture (performing groups shall also issue a list of actors) and a short-term work certificate in China;

7. Those who enter China to complete other short-term work tasks should submit the "Notification Letter of Work Permit for Foreigners" issued by the Shenzhen Human Resources and Social Security Department;

8. Record Book of Foreign-related enterprises in Shenzhen;

9. For those who have reached the age of 18 and apply for residence permits in Shenzhen for the first time, they are required to fill in the " Investigation Form for Residence Permit " (which can be downloaded from website http://ga.sz.gov.cn/WSBS/BGXZ/CRJ/);

10. Foreigner applying for a reissue of residence permit should provide a certificate that proves his/her loss of passport, or a diplomatic note from the embassies and consulates of his/her country in China;

11. Other certification materials deemed necessary by Public Security Bureau.

 

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Q: If a foreigner comes to China for short-term work to complete work tasks in two or more provincial-level regions, and the stay period is less than 90 days, do they need to renew a work and residence permit at each different work place?

A: No need. Where the location of the foreigner entering the country to complete the work task involves two or more regions, all the work task locations shall be filled in and indicated in the column of the name of the work unit, and the relevant formalities shall only be applied for at the location of the domestic partner, and the residence formalities shall not be repeated.

 

Q: Do foreigners who come to China for short-term work for less than 30 days also need to apply for a work residence permit?

A: The duration of stay is not more than 30 days. In this case, you can enter China with the Z-visa issued by the embassy and leave the country before the visa expires. If the stay period is more than 30 days and less than 90 days (including 90 days), after entering the country with a Z visa, the applicant needs to convert to a work residence permit of the same period as the work permit, and then can stay and work within the validity period.

 

Q: What situations are not considered to complete short-term work assignments in China?

A: 1. Purchase machinery and equipment supporting maintenance, installation, commissioning, disassembly, guidance and training;

2. Guiding, supervising and inspecting the bid winning projects in China;

3. Dispatched to a domestic branch, subsidiary or representative office to complete short-term work;

4. Participants in sports events (including athletes, coaches, team doctors, assistants and other relevant personnel). However, according to the requirements of international sports organizations, with the approval of the competent authorities of our country, except the entry of the registration card to participate in the competition);

5. volunteers who enter China for unpaid work or are paid by foreign organizations.
