Northeast Electric Power University is located in the beautiful Jilin City City, Jilin Province. The university is a key university in Jilin Province. Founded in 1949, it is the first electric power engineering school founded by the CPC. It was named Jilin Electric Power College in 1958 and renamed Tohoku Electric Power College in 1978. Formerly under the Ministry of Electric Power and the State Power Corporation of China, since 2000, the school has implemented the management mode of "central and local co construction, focusing on local management". In 2005, the school was renamed as Northeast Electric Power University. In 2012, the school was selected as a key construction university in the national "Central and Western University Basic Capacity Construction Project".

The school adheres to the central position of teaching work and actively constructs and continuously optimizes the innovative talent training system. There are currently 5 national characteristic majors, 13 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 4 national high-quality courses, 4 national high-quality resource sharing courses, 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, and 10 experimental teaching demonstration centers in Jilin Province. In recent years, the school has won three national excellent teaching achievement awards. The school is a national cultural and quality education base for college students, a national social sports talent training and research base, one of the first batch of national engineering practice education centers construction units, a pilot university for the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan", and a national level professional and technical personnel continuing education base.

The school always adheres to the scientific and technological innovation policy of facing the forefront of world science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, and the major needs of the country, continuously improving its academic research level and scientific and technological innovation capabilities. The school currently has 2 national and local joint engineering laboratories, 2 key laboratories (engineering research centers) of the Ministry of Education, 1 National University Science and Technology Park, 5 Jilin Province Major Demand Collaborative Innovation Centers, 1 Jilin Province International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, and 30 Jilin Province Key Laboratories, Engineering Research Centers, and Liberal Arts Bases. In recent years, the school has undertaken over 2700 scientific research projects at all levels, represented by the National Key R&D Plan, National Science and Technology Major Special Projects, National Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Special Projects, and National Natural Science Foundation Key Projects; Received 4 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, over 150 provincial and ministerial level science and technology awards such as the Jilin Province Special Contribution Award for Science and Technology, and the Jilin Province Achievement Transformation Contribution Award; Nearly 700 authorized invention patents have made significant contributions to promoting technological progress, as well as the construction and development of the power industry and regional economy.

During the "14th Five Year Plan" period, with the goal of building a university satisfying the people and cultivating qualified builders and reliable successors for the socialist cause, the university deeply implemented the strategy of "strengthening the university with talents, giving priority to quality, sustained and rapid development with characteristics, open cooperation", continued to emancipate the mind, keep pace with the times, blaze new trails, and work tirelessly to build a Research university with characteristics and high-level applications.
